Article Title: A new broadly tunable (7.4–10.2eV) laser based VUV light source and its first application to aerosol mass spectrometry
Article Snippet: A laser based vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light source using resonance enhanced four wave difference mixing in xenon gas was developed for near threshold ionization of organics in atmospheric aerosol particles.. The source delivers high intensity pulses of VUV light (in the range of 1010 to 1013 photons/pulse depending on wavelength, 5 ns FWHM) with a continuously tunable wavelength from 122 nm (10.2 eV) to 168 nm (7.4 eV).. The setup allows for tight (<1 mm2) and precise focusing ( rad pointing angle adjustability), attributes required for single particle detection.

Article Title: Revealing the Origins of Electrophilic Reactivity and Regioselectivity of Linear Acenes Using Interaction Energy Decomposition Potentials
Article Snippet: The intrinsic electrophilic reactivity of linear acenes up to octacene was investigated by using interaction energy potentials and their components, namely Pauli repulsion, orbital interaction, and electrostatic interaction potentials using the Ziegler–Rauk decomposition scheme.. We found that the shared regions above C1 and C2 of the outer ring are slightly more attractive towards an incoming electrophile than the inner ring secondary carbon atoms, mostly due to a more advantageous electrostatic interaction.. This result agrees with the stability order of prereactive π complexes formed between anthracene and the electrophilic HCl.

Article Title: Electron ionization of SiCl4.
Article Snippet: Relative partial ionization cross sections (PICS) for the formation of fragment ions following electron ionization of SiCl4, in the electron energy range 30–200 eV, have been determined using timeof-flight mass spectrometry coupled with an ion coincidence technique.. By this method, the contributions to the yield of each fragment ion from dissociative single, double, and triple ionization, are distinguished.. These yields are quantified in the form of relative precursor-specific PICS, which are reported here for the first time for SiCl4.

Article Title: Gas-Phase Ion-Molecule Reactions of Copper Hydride Anions [CuH 2 ] - and [Cu 2 H 3 ] .
Article Snippet: Gas-phase reactivity of the copper hydride anions [CuH2] − and [Cu2H3] − toward a range of neutral reagents has been examined via multistage mass spectrometry experiments in a linear ion trap mass spectrometer in conjunction with isotope labeling studies and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations.. [CuH2] − is more reactive than [Cu2H3] −, consistent with DFT calculations, which show it has a higher energy HOMO.. Experimentally, [CuH2] − was found to react with CS2 via hydride transfer to give thioformate (HCS2 −) in competition with the formation of the organometallic [CuCS2] − ion via liberation of hydrogen; CO2 via insertion to produce [HCuO2CH] −; methyl iodide and allyl iodide to give I− and [CuHI]−; and 2,2,2trifluoroethanol and 1-butanethiol via protonation to give hydrogen and the product anions [CuH(OCH2CF3)] − and [CuH(SBu)]−.

Article Title: The Spectroscopy of C 2 : A Cosmic Beacon.
Article Snippet: CONSPECTUS: Dicarbon, the molecule formed from two carbon atoms, is among the most abundant molecules in the universe.. Said by some to exhibit a quadruple bond, it is bound by more than 6 eV and supports a large number of valence electronic states.. It thus has a rich spectroscopy, with 19 one-photon band systems, four of which were discovered by the author and co-workers.
